Wonderland’s Dubliners CD Launch

If you’ve already read my review of Wonderland Productions’ Dubliners audio walking tour, then you’ll know I’m a fan. An audio walking tour immersing the walker into the stories of Dubliners with the sounds and music appearing as you visit locations scattered across the city; the tour is a great opportunity for readers of Joyce to bring the stories to life.

CD front cover Dubliners_ResizedStaring out the window, you may feel a little reluctant at the prospect of staring at Joyce’s grey Dublin with the wind and rain beating your face, so the company’s newly released CD version of the tour is just the ticket.

For me the beauty of the stories is that they are unlike your average audio book as the stories have been carefully edited to make them all about the dialogue and sounds and less about the prose itself. The narrative sections have been partially removed and in some instances changed into dialogue so that the listener gets a more 360 view of the story than they would with a traditional reading of each story.

The acting cast is wonderful – melodious Dublin accents skip their way through the stories, inviting you to become part of each event.

If you’d like to experience the actual walking tour (which I’d highly recommend) you can do so by starting off from the James Joyce Centre on North Great George’s Street or if you fancy cuddling up on the couch and experiencing Joyce’s Dublin through CD – maybe opening up Google Street View as you do, then you can download the album on iTunes ($9.99) or purchase the CD on Amazon (£19.41).

“Great White Bear”

Bugbox created this great animated movie for Dear Reader‘s new song “Great White Bear” – I’ve never heard of either Bugbox or Dear Reader but this is a pretty cool video:

Two Door Cinema Club

As we speak…even though we’re not actually speaking – I’m typing and you’re reading (thanks for reading!), I’m having my first listen to Two Door Cinema Club’s album – Tourist History. I know I’m behind the gravy train on this one, but sure better late than never.

They’re sounding great so far anyways. Lots of happy poppiness to counteract all the doom and gloom at the moment. Sign up here for their newsletter and you’ll get a few free downloads – happy days!

WERK at the Peacock Review

The very fact that the Abbey ever allowed the ever eccentric thisispopbaby’s inside the door of the Peacock is exciting. To be honest, I had begun to tire of the Abbey, and feel disillusioned at their status as the national theatre. I feel that last Saturday’s WERK at the Peacock reinstated the Abbey somewhat as a theatre that really works to reflect the mood, atmosphere, trends and interests of Ireland as a nation. The fact that this first night of the self proclaiming Performance Arts Club was a sell out is justification enough for its continuing association with the national theatre.

While the staging of the ever popular Macbeth drew to a close on the main stage, (and I did spy some of its stars – Michael McElhatton and Eileen Walsh sneak in after), the gold lame, lipstick and thumping beats were beginning to take pace downstairs. The only thing even remotely similar to WERK that I’ve ever come in contact with before is The Shoestring Collective, but this is on a far more low key. WERK was a heady mix of great Irish writing, from both Mark O’Halloran and Mark O’Rowe (in the form of Andrea Irvine’s performance from Terminus), music (James O’Neill of Bitches with Wolves), art and general fun.

One of the big pluses to the night out was the incredibly low bar charges – €5 for any spirit with a mixer. I loved the old school placement of big bottles of coke, 7up and other mixers on the bar to help yourself, and cans were only €3 for all you beer burpers.

The only thing I could really fault was, ironically enough, the choice of location. Theoretically, of course, the Peacock is the most suitably location, however, logistically, for me it just didn’t work. The space is far too small for the amount of people that were there, the acoustics were horrific and it really was not fair to be constantly shushing people in the adjoining room, who couldn’t see or hear what was going on on stage. I was in the main room, with a perfect view of the stage and had trouble in particular understanding the MC, and really did feel sorry for the other people left outside in the hallway who couldn’t enjoy what was on stage. Of course they were going to chat, it’s a night out with friends, they’re drinking, they can’t see that Andrea Irvine is performing a fantastic piece of acting on stage! I really hope that both the Abbey and thisispopbaby consider moving WERK into the far more spacious main bar in the Abbey.

So, with two more definite dates in the diary for WERK at the Abbey; I’m excited at the idea that the Peacock and the Abbey can be more than just a theatre, it can be a location for people across Dublin to sample new writing, music, art etc. Hmmm, maybe for a national theatre, perhaps WERK should go nationwide?! I think the whole of Ireland needs to go to WERK….

Thisispopbaby’s Werk at The Abbey Theatre

Darkest Corner (a series of performances based on clerical abuse) versus WERK …“a late-night haze of neon and performance, live art and discotheque”…..based on the video below I know which one I’m choosing!

Hurray for d’Abbey for finally choosing something different and fun – the perfect antidote to all the doom and gloom….bring on Miss Panti, leopard print and cocktails :) And for only €10 a pop if you book in advance, it’s as cheap as chips too :) More info on the abbey’s website.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela Review

I was one of the lucky ones at last night’s Rodrigo Y Gabriela gig in the Olympia Theatre. I should, at the outset, state that I am no music connoisseur and I don’t play any musical instrument, however my own intuition tells me that what tiny, teensy, delightful Gabriela did to that guitar last night was not normal!!!

The gig was fantastic, five stars all round – even with the nutty, shouty guys a few standing rows behind us who kept on heckling the Mexican duo – ah sure, they made the rest of us look civilised! The talented two had just as much resilience as Eamon Morrissey on Saturday night, especially Gabriela’s nuckles which were used to repeatedly drum on the guitar – as my gig buddy said “her hands freak me out, hands aren’t supposed to do things like that”.

It’s odd, and I don’t mean to go into any sort of feminist rant, but I felt particularly triumphant as a woman coming out of the gig as Gabriela really kicked Rodrigo’s ass in terms of guitar playing. Maybe I’m missing the point. They’re a couple who have been playing guitar together for years, and they have obviously reached a “groove” which suits their act, but you can’t help feeling that she really is the star of the show. Rodrigo is the show man, calling on the audience to clap and cheer, but all eyes are on Garbiela’s hands at the end of the day!

Here’s a video I found on Youtube today from last night’s gig – thanks to garretdpearse . Visual not so good, but as I thought to myself last night as yet another ridiculously tall person stood in front on me, it’s all about the music:

Missed them?! Not to worry, because the sexy, musical couple love us so much; they’re back in Ireland in December.

I’m braving the Abbey tomorrow night for Terminus. Looking forward to it, as I missed it last time it played in the Peacock and have heard only good things.

Also, off to Belfast in December – any ideas for a good gig or play to go to up there?!
